Melvin D. MacCallum, 87, of Village Gate, Farmington, formerly of Bristol, widower of Eleanor Patricia “Pat” MacCallum, died on Wednesday (December 25, 2019) at The Pines at Bristol. Mel was born on January 22, 1932 in Bristol and was one of three children of the late William and Linda (Robertson) MacCallum. A longtime Bristol resident, he graduated from Bristol High School and worked for Funk Funeral Home before joining the Bristol Fire Department. He went on to serve the fire department for 28 years before retiring in 1985 as Deputy Fire Marshall. He then served a year as Fire Code Inspector for the State of Connecticut. He then was the manager of West Cemetery and Peacedale Cemetery in Bristol from 1986 until he moved to Port Charlotte, FL in 1996. He spent summers in Tabusintac, New Brunswick for several years before moving to Kennett Square, PA in 2012 and returning to Connecticut in 2016. He was a member of the Frederick-Franklin Lodge #14 AF & AM and was formerly a member of the Demolay Shriners. He was a longtime member of First Congregational Church, Bristol. Mel is survived by two daughters, Linda Whitcraft and husband, Dave, of Kennett Square, PA and Betsy Ann Morrell, and her husband, James, of Bristol; two sisters: Shirley Chambers of Bristol, and Margaret MacCallum of Florida; five grandchildren, Shawn Fabrizio and his wife, Brittni, Matthew Fabrizio and his wife, Sara, Sarah Kilpatrick, and her husband, Joe, Nichole Morrell, and Katelyn Morrell; nine great-grandchildren, Brayden, Nicholas, Anthony, Nathan, and Nico Fabrizio, Ryan, Madison, Bryson, and Logan Kilpatrick; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Brian MacCallum, and a daughter, Helen MacCallum. Funeral services will be held on Monday (December 30, 2019) at 11 AM at First Congregational Church, 31 Maple St., Bristol. Burial will follow in West Cemetery, Bristol. Relatives and friends may call at Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, on Sunday between 4 and 7 PM.
