Tribute

Lawrence "Shumo" Shular, 68, of Bristol, passed away suddenly on July 1, 2021 due to complications from pancreatic cancer. He leaves behind his wife of 41 years Melody (Kulpanowski) Shular.

Larry earned his degree in music education from Berklee College of Music in Boston. In the 1970's - 2000's he was the keyboardist and arranger for several CT bands including Cartoon, Nutz, Front Page, and Back in Play, as well as touring the country with several show bands including Top Shelf and Nightbird.

Larry founded Shular's Produce which provided wholesale fruit and produce to several Bristol institutions for over 20 years. He spent much of his retirement writing and arranging music and enjoyed playing RPG video games. Shumo loved cooking, trying new recipes, and made the best corned beef reubens on the planet, all while wearing flannel 365 days a year.

He is pre-deceased by his parents, Lawrence "Sam" Shular and Violet (Bryzenski) Shular, who owned and operated Shular's Market on King St. in Bristol for many years.

In addition to his wife, Larry is survived by his son Samuel and daughter Laura. He also leaves behind his best friend and partner in crime for over 60 years, Thomas Varhol of Middlebury, CT, as well as his faithful canine companions Heidi and Laynee.

Funerals and receiving lines were not on his list of favorite things so in honoring his wishes, there was a small private gathering to celebrate his life. Funk Funeral Home, Bristol, CT has the honor of serving Larry’s family. Please visit Larry’s memorial website at www.FunkFuneralHome.com
