James N. Shopey, 73, of Bristol, died peacefully after a brief illness at UCONN Health on April 18, 2021. James is survived by his wife, Lynn (Melnick) Shopey; daughter Karina Shopey; daughter and son-in-law Sheila and Eric Beebe and grandchildren Bryce and Hailey Beebe, all of Bristol. He is preceded in death by his father Nicholas Shopey; mother Aurora (Ouellette) Nadeau and brothers Clayton and Ronald Shopey. James was born on July 30, 1947, was a lifelong resident of Bristol and attended Bristol Eastern High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served his country during the Vietnam War. He married his love in 1969 and they enjoyed 52 wonderful years together. He worked for Altair/Midland Ross in Plymouth for over 25 years and later worked for Scott Metals in Bristol before retirement. James enjoyed gardening, tinkering around with handy-man projects, puzzles and his iPad and headphones. In his earlier years he enjoyed fishing at Lake Champlain in Vermont and loved to bar-b-que. He was a family man and most important to him was spending time with his grandchildren and his grand pets Abby and Toby (late). He will be sadly missed by family and friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Jason Carrese and the entire staff at UCONN John Dempsey Hospital for the care, support and compassion they provided during these past few difficult months. A private burial with military honors will be held at the convenience of the family. Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, has the honor of serving James’s family.
