Gloria Sweeney

Gloria (Marchese) Sweeney, 90, beloved wife of the late Richard J. Sweeney, died on Monday (July 23, 2018). Gloria was born in Bristol on March 26, 1928 and was a daughter of the late John and Marta (Pastore) Marchese. Gloria was raised in Bristol and was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild. She worked at the City of Bristol, Personnel Department for 8 years and later worked for Smith Reporters, Inc. from 1980 until retirement. Gloria enjoyed trips with her friend Steffie Allaire, her hair being done by her hairdresser Izzy LaFountaine, bowling with Louise Barcekowski, homemade cookies from Francine Sadecki and watching the UConn girls with Ceil Cowles. Gloria is survived by her two daughters: Kathleen S. Norton and her husband Michael, Amy Szoka and her husband Douglas; five grandchildren: Heather Fontaine and her husband Jason, Kara Kempf and her husband Michael, Chris Norton, Tyler Yancoskie, Doug Szoka; six great grandchildren: Alyssa Fontaine, Josh Fontaine, Ryan Fontaine, Matt Kempf, Lia Kempf, Nora Norton; and several nieces and nephews that she was close to, especially Sue and Dean Fippinger who visited her weekly. Gloria was Mom and Gram to many including, Alecia O’Donnell, Tom O’Donnell, Marsha Testa, David Testa, Ty Monico, Kathy Monico, Spec Monico, Mary Jane Monico and their children. In addition to her husband and parents, Gloria is predeceased by her brother: Michael Marchese; and her five sisters: Mary Budnick, Pauline Demora, Kathryn Laviero, Rose Vanesse, Marty Monico. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday (July 26, 2018) at St. Joseph Church, 33 Queen St., Bristol at 10AM. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol.
