Tribute

Beverly Flanagan Lowrey, 82 of Bristol CT, beloved wife of Charles Robert Lowrey, took her last breath surrounded by family on Thursday July 29, 2021. Born on June 19, 1939, in Middlebury VT, the daughter of Ralph and Grace (Butterfield) Flanagan. Beverly was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Peterson and brother, Larry Flanagan.

In addition to her husband of almost 62 years, Beverly is survived by three children:

●Corinna Lowrey of Burlington, CT
●Mark Lowrey and wife Ann of Concord, NC
●Rebecca Lowrey-Gibbs and husband Charles of Bristol, CT
●Three grandchildren: C.J. Gibbs IV, Isabella and Declan Lowrey
●Numerous nieces and nephews
●Many grand pets

Raised in Bristol, Beverly graduated from Bristol High School. For several years, Beverly worked as a check writer for the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company. Eventually she found her calling as the Therapeutic Recreation Director for the Nursing Care Center of Bristol, now known as The Pines, for 26 years until retiring.

An innovator in her field, Beverly was the first to introduce pet therapy as part of her Recreation program. It was common to see her toy French poodle Hersey by her side, interacting with patients as Bev ran her programs and visited with patients throughout the building. Beverly will be remembered for her compassion, always helping and caring for people.

As a 4-H leader, she was dedicated to helping the young lives she touched, giving them tools to use in their futures. She fostered numerous children with disabilities throughout her life, teaching her own children lessons of kindness and empathy. Bev loved children and her home was the home where all the neighborhood kids would play. “Mom” was how she was known to many of the children that came into her life.

One of her greatest joys was becoming a grandmother. She made her decision clear from the beginning to be fully involved in her grandchild’s life, a decision that was non-negotiable. During CJ’s cheer events Bev provided the support only a grandmother could give. From MA to FL her support never wavered and she looked forward to the next time she could see him compete.

As the first violinist in the Bristol Symphony Orchestra, music was a staple in her life. She also had a beautiful singing voice. Her musical preferences were eclectic, with tastes ranging from Bette Midler and Ray Charles to the Bee Gees, Take 6, and Pentatonix. It was common to find her listening to Andrea Bocelli every Saturday morning if you happen to stop by to visit.

Bev loved to attend NASCAR, Whaler’s and Hartford Wolfpack hockey, UCONN basketball, New York Yankees, (a diehard Derek Jeter fan), New Britain Rockcats, Bristol Blues, Professional Bull Riding (PBR) and Arena Football.

A lover of life, Bev’s interests included skydiving, driving a race car, glider plane rides, sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting and volunteering. She volunteered for many organizations with the American Clock & Watch Museum being the last. Her faith remained important. She was an active member of Prospect United Methodist Church.

In honor of Beverly, donations can be made to 4-H, (4-h.org) and The Village for Families and Children, Inc. (thevillage.org).
