Angela (Carroccia) Basile, 89, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2019 after a short illness at Bristol Hospital. She was born in Lenola, Italy on March 1, 1930 and came to the United States on September 18, 1935, settling in Farmington, Connecticut. She became a naturalized American citizen on June 13, 1952. She attended public school in Farmington, graduating at the top of her high school class. She went on to attend college at Saint Joseph College and graduated from the University of Buffalo. Angela also attended the New York School of Design where she studied fashion and clothing design. She began her teaching career in Farmington and later became a member of the Bristol Public School System. Her first teaching position in Bristol was at the Farmington Avenue School where she taught first grade. She also taught adults sewing in night school where she made many friends. After raising her three children, she returned to teaching full time. She taught Home Economics in several middle schools and later at Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern High School. A natural teacher, Angela was loved by her students and truly enjoyed making a positive impact on young peoples’ lives. She retired from teaching at Bristol Eastern High School in 1993.
Angela was known for her expertise in sewing and cooking. She was a particularly creative cook and loved to serve her family delicious meals. Her hobbies included reading, photography, and crafts. She enjoyed sharing her talents with family and friends and made many gifts by hand over the years. Angela touched many lives and will be remembered for her kindness and great compassion for people.
Angela leaves her husband of almost fifty-nine years, Joseph Basile of Bristol, and three children and their spouses: her son Joseph Basile, Jr. and his wife Julie Basile of Bridgeport, Connecticut; her son John Basile and his wife Caelah Basile of Norfolk, Massachusetts; and her daughter Mary Beth Chopas and her husband James Chopas of Concord, Massachusetts. Angela leaves four grandchildren whom she adored: Nicolas Basile, Justin Basile, Maria Chopas, and Sophia Chopas.
For many years, Angela was a devoted caregiver to her mother and father, Joseph and Maria Carroccia, who are both deceased. She is survived by two sisters, Mary Nahom of New Milford and Josephine Kotler of West Hartford. She also leaves two brothers, Sisto Carroccia of Newington and Michael Carroccia of Plantsville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at St Gregory Church, 235 Maltby Street, Bristol at 12 PM. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, 160 Garden Street, Farmington. Family and friends may call at Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave, Bristol on Thursday, May 2, 2019 between the hours of 10:30 AM and 11:30 AM.
