Hello to the Granger Family; may I please offer my condolences and respects on Don's passing. You do not know me, and this is going to sound a little strange to you, but I felt that I had to share a little story with you: I went to work at Hilldreth Press in 1974, as a 19 year-old helper trainee in the Bindery Dept. That's where I met Don; he was operating a Stand-up forklift truck at the time, and he was THE BEST FORKLIFT OPERATOR THERE!!! ( I tried driving it once, and almost fillipped it over, it was like driving a tractor-trailer in reverse!!!). He had a very intimidating presence about him(at least for a young guy like me, who was 21 years younger than him) he always wore tight tee-shirts with the cigarette pack rolled up, and he was really muscle led-up, and had kind of long hair. Me being one of the new kids, he would only speak to me for strictly business reasons, and that was okay by me!!! But after I had been there a couple of months, Don became an apprentice and worked with a journeyman named George LeBuff, I think; and they seemed to be real good friends, and so I got to work with Don and to know him better, and even though I was kind of a klutz, and sometimes the saddle stitcher or the perfect binder machine would go too fast to keep up with, Don would always come over and help us catch-up, and when the trimmer machine way down on our book -catching end would shut off , we would yell to Don (it was his job to keep that part running, even though it was a long way from his station, and it was so loud he couldn't hear or see it shut down, he would have to come running to reset it, or everything would back-up into a big mess!!! So Don appreciated it when we called him as soon as it stopped, and maybe that's one of the reasons Don seemed to get nicer and friendlier with me, and after a while him and George and another journeyman named Jack Nichols kind of "adopted" me into the crew and I even went out for beers with Don and the guys a couple of times on Friday nights after work!! I was never afraid of Don after that, I kind of even though of him like a big brother type of guy. I was laid-off from there after that year(last hired, first fired!) and I never saw DON again, but I wanted you to know, even though this happened all those years ago, that when I saw Don's name and picture today I was reminded of how this rough-tough man that I was scared of, went out of his way to show kindness and friendship to a young guy that's never forgotten him!!!! THANK YOU FOR READING THIS, AND BEST WHISHES TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY! Sincerely, Charles Orvis, Plainville, Ct.

Hi, Charles, that was very nice story of my father at work. He intimidated me also when i worked there also , but my father was tough on the outside and a kind loving man on the inside . I will miss him greatly. Ken granger
