Obituary for Alfred B. Atwell

Alfred B. Atwell, 93, of Bristol, husband of Helen (Berg) Atwell, died Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Bristol Hospital. Alfred was born December 24, 1916 in Worcester, MA and was a son of the late Byron H. and Barbara (Schlittler) Atwell. He was a U. S. Army veteran having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps with 9th Airforce, 406th Fighter Group, 512th P-47 Squadron in Europe. A longtime Bristol resident he was employed at New Departure- Hyatt, Division of General Motors for 42 years prior to his retirement in 1977. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, Bristol and was also a Mason with the Wyllis-St. John Lodge AF & AM in West Hartford for the past 62 years. In addition to his wife of 63 years he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Robert and Virginia Atwell of Durham, NC and Richard Atwell and Lorene Guffey of Janesville, CA; a daughter and son-in-law: Karen and Joseph Godwin of San Antonio, TX; a sister: Mildred Scotton of Bloomfield; five grandchildren; Six great Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers: Raymond and Donald Atwell and a grandson. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday (March 3, 2010), 11 AM, at the First Congregational Church, 31 Maple St., Bristol. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Peacedale Cemetery, Bristol. Relatives and friends may call at the Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol on Tuesday between 6 and 8 PM.
